Large financial institutions provide significant financing to many high-emitting entities, such as fossil fuel companies and steel manufacturers. In order to limit their Scope 3 emissions and reduce their impact on climate change, banks are exploring strategies to mitigate their exposure to “financed emissions” associated with lending and investing activities. Banks can play a unique role in accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy and meeting the global climate goal of less than 1.5-degrees of warming by providing capital towards sustainability innovations.
